Talal Darjani at NYU: A New Vision for Theatre by Prof Talal Darjani

                                                                     Dr. Talal Darjani – Lebanon

I consider the LIRIS World Scenography Conference at New York University a defining moment in our collective journey toward shaping a contemporary theatrical civilization.

Today, as consumerist tendencies risk stripping the arts of their deeper cultural and human value, this conference — rooted in the New Sorbonne University in Paris — reaffirms the true identity of theatre. It restores its role as a living art that unites intellect, philosophy, and scientific inquiry.

For me, this gathering is not a cultural showcase. It is an international academic summit built on clear convictions:

Academic and scientific platforms are essential to transcend consumerist art and reclaim its human essence.

Universities and theatre institutes remain the cornerstone for building a solid artistic movement through advanced, evolving curricula.

Theatre can prosper only through the meeting point between academic reflection and practical artistic innovation.

Dialogue between universities and theatres worldwide creates a dynamic and enriching exchange that opens new pathways for theatrical development.

I believe this conference serves as a genuine space to introduce:

Contemporary theatrical theories — especially in scenography — are grounded in deep intellectual and philosophical foundations and tested through practical application.

Distinguished theatrical works that embody innovation, experimentation, and training.

Scientific research that confirms theatre as both an art and a science.

In this spirit, the conference becomes an open global laboratory where research meets creation, producing a new theatrical language based on scientific rigor, cultural dialogue, and international cooperation — not transient entertainment.

In this context, and in my capacity as Scientific Director and regional reference for the LIRIS Scenography Lab at the New Sorbonne University – Paris for the Middle East and North Africa region, I will be taking part in the conference at New York University from 5 to 7,  2025.

During this conference, I will present two scientific contributions that reflect my current research path:

“The Dramatic Character of Scenography” — a conceptual framework for understanding the dramatic function of theatrical space.

“The Philosophy of Fertilization in Theatrical Performance” — an integrated directorial methodology that redefines the theatrical process in a comprehensive and contemporary manner.

The conference will also feature contributions from the scientific directors of other global regions, alongside a distinguished group of researchers, academics, and artists from around the world.
