Hoda Zohrob – Lebanon

 

Landscapes, chiaroscuro, and vivid colors became her passion expressed through photography.

Hoda Zohrob, a Lebanese author who travels through her homeland with her cell phone, strives to give us expressive snapshots of everyday life.

Light and hope are mixed with the daily life of people who have been going through painful trials for decades.

With her works, she summons us to reflect on the beauty hidden from the eyes of the hasty traveler, inspiring us to observe each day from a new perspective.

From «Diafanis Magazine» we talked to her to reveal more facts about her works.

 

• When did you start to be interested in photography and taking photos?

My ​ mother and father were my first inspiration. ​I was the biggest fan of their works.

​My mum was an haute couture tailor. ​ Overwhelmed with local and foreign women who wanted her to sew for them, I had to be her right hand.  She taught me how to match colors and sketches. ​

​My dad used to design and sculpt scattered lumber founds in gardens and woods to ​come out with beautiful pieces of art​ ​such as chandeliers, cigarette boxes, and jewelry boxes he used to encrust with seashells he​ collected himself and to linen with wonderful colors​ of sateen fabrics. ​

​One of my favorite classes at school was the drawing class, as among the loveliest gifts I’ve ever received were a drawing kit and a camera.

However, during celebration events, my joy was to videotape and photoshoot while others are celebrating…

Photographing is my hobby.

Coincidentally, I recently realized that I am able to recognize unnoticed spots that mean nothing to others but can form beautiful tableaux to me, not to miss the opportunities I began to wander with my cam to shoot.

 

• How were the first steps in this activity?

When I used to go out with friends or family, I sometimes become disconnected from the real world so I go peering around with the telephone in my hand to make sure I don’t miss any spot that deserves to be captured and it was embarrassing as for my companions I should stay with them not apart…

Nowadays, it is my priority to find the right time to go scouting out potential photo chances with my camera, although around me there is nothing but cars, people, and noises.

It’s a hobby that became my priority.

 

• What are the reasons that lead you to photograph? What themes do you prefer?

My passion leads me to photograph.
What I am thrilled about, is extracting the beauty from an unrecognized spot, for instance, from a rain puddle on an abandoned pavement or from an engraved piece of iron in a humid and cracked wall…

The beauty I aim to trace, others, usually don’t admit until It is already transmitted into beautiful photos.

 

• You gave us a glimpse of a photograph that is characterized by special colors and lighting. What details could you provide us in this regard? 

Among the main components that are required to create an image are the colors and lightings, knowing when and where to stand is the key.

As an amateur, I read about photography to educate myself and analyze eminent photographers’ works,

Although I get dozens of photos end of the day, most would be deleted when I realize that the angle from which I took the photo wasn’t good or that the sun or moon rays penetrating the spot I’m photographing were not sufficient so the colors fade…

In other meaning when the photo is not pleasant to the eye, it means that there is something wrong that should not occur again.

What matters is the experience I’m gaining.

 

• As an artist, what does it mean for you to show reality through the lens of your camera?  

Lebanon has witnessed long years of war, which are depicted for instance, in electricity cables swaying in the air, an unaccomplished construction, a smashed wall, a destroyed house, a deserted street, a silhouette of a historic venue… it’s there where I’m stuck, it is there where I live.

As a challenge, I decided to wander the streets, to excavate glimpses of beauty amid those decrepit traces.

• Are you working now on some ideas, or projects, or working with other professionals? 

Currently, I am compiling and archiving my photos, noting that I can get new ones every day.  In the future, I aim to present them to galleries and decorators… I wish to frame and print them on canvas.

Also, having my own gallery and participating in exhibitions is also in mind.

Hoda Zohrob del Líbano: «Generar la emoción es extraer la belleza en medio de la fealdad»

Los paisajes, los claroscuros y los colores vivos se convirtieron en su pasión expresada a través de la fotografía.

Hoda Zohrob, autora libanesa que recorre su tierra natal con su teléfono móvil, se esfuerza por regalarnos expresivas instantáneas de la vida cotidiana.

La luz y la esperanza se mezclan con el día a día de personas que atraviesan dolorosas pruebas desde hace décadas.

Con sus obras nos convoca a reflexionar sobre la belleza oculta a los ojos del viajero apresurado, inspirándonos a observar cada día desde una nueva perspectiva.

Desde «Diafanis Magazine» hablamos con ella para dar a conocer más datos sobre sus obras.

 

• ¿Cuándo comenzó a interesarte por la fotografía y sacar fotos?

Mi madre y mi padre fueron mi primera inspiración. Yo era la mayor admiradora de su trabajo.

Mi madre era sastre de alta costura. Desbordada de mujeres locales y extranjeras que querían que ella les cosiera, yo tenía que ser su mano derecha. Ella me enseñó a combinar colores y bocetos. ​

Mi papá acostumbraba diseñar y esculpir madera esparcida que se encuentra en jardines y bosques para producir hermosas piezas de arte como candelabros, cajas de cigarrillos y joyeros que solía incrustar con conchas marinas que él mismo recogía y para ropa de cama con maravillosos colores​ de telas satinadas. ​

​Una de mis clases favoritas en la escuela era la clase de dibujo, ya que entre los regalos más bonitos que he recibido estaban un kit de dibujo y una cámara.

Sin embargo, durante los eventos de celebración, mi alegría era grabar videos y tomar fotos mientras otros celebraban…

Fotografiar es mi hobby.

Coincidentemente, recientemente me di cuenta de que soy capaz de reconocer puntos que pasan inadvertidos, que no significan nada para los demás, pero que pueden formar hermosos cuadros para mí, para no perder las oportunidades en las que comencé a deambular con mi cámara para sacar fotos.

 

• ¿Cómo fueron los primeros pasos en esta actividad?

Cuando salía con amigos o familiares, algunas veces comienzo a desconectarme del mundo real, así que miro alrededor con el teléfono en la mano para asegurarme de no perderme ningún lugar que merezca ser capturado y es embarazoso como por mis compañeros debo quedarme con ellos no separados…

Hoy, es mi prioridad encontrar el momento adecuado para ir a buscar posibles oportunidades para tomar fotos con mi cámara, aunque a mi alrededor no hay nada más que autos, gente y ruidos.

Es un hobby que se convirtió en mi prioridad.

 

• ¿Cuáles son los motivos que la llevan a fotografiar? ¿Qué temas prefiere?

Mi pasión me lleva a fotografiar.

Lo que me emociona es extraer la belleza de un lugar desconocido, por ejemplo, de un charco de lluvia en un pavimento abandonado o de un hierro grabado en una pared húmeda y agrietada…

La belleza que pretendo rastrear, otros, generalmente no lo admiten hasta que ya se transmite en hermosas fotos.

 

• Usted nos da una mirada de una fotografía que se caracteriza por colores e iluminación especiales. ¿Qué detalles nos podría proporcionar al respecto?

Entre los principales componentes que se requieren para crear una imagen están los colores y las luces, saber cuándo y dónde pararse es la clave.

Como aficionado, leo sobre fotografía para educarme y analizar los trabajos de fotógrafos eminentes,

Aunque saco docenas de fotos, al final del día, la mayoría las borro cuando me doy cuenta de que el ángulo desde el que tomé la foto no era bueno o que los rayos del sol o la luna que penetraban en el lugar que estoy fotografiando no eran suficientes y los colores se desvanecen…

En otro sentido, cuando la foto no es agradable a la vista, significa que hay algo mal que no debería volver a ocurrir.

Lo que importa es la experiencia que estoy ganando.

 

• Como artista, ¿qué significa para usted mostrar la realidad a través del lente de su cámara?

El Líbano ha sido testigo de largos años de guerra, que se representan, por ejemplo, en cables eléctricos que se balancean en el aire, una construcción inacabada, un muro derribado, una casa destruida, una calle desierta, la silueta de un lugar histórico… es allí donde yo estoy atascada, es allí donde vivo.

Como desafío, decidí deambular por las calles, para excavar destellos de belleza en medio de esos rastros decrépitos.“Del sufrimiento han surgido las almas más fuertes; los personajes más masivos están chamuscados con cicatrices”, Jalil Gibran.

 

• ¿Estás trabajando ahora en algunas ideas, proyectos o trabajando con otros profesionales?

Actualmente, estoy recopilando y archivando mis fotos, notando que puedo obtener nuevas todos los días. En el futuro, pretendo presentarlos a galerías y decoradores… Deseo enmarcarlos e imprimirlos en lienzo.

También está en mente tener mi galería y participar en exposiciones.
