Gisele Abou Kheir – Diplomate in Art – Artist and artisan from Lebanon

If you are walking in the South-Center of Lebanon, in the Mount Lebanon Governorate, you are in Deir Al Qamar, the «Monastery of the Moon», as this city is named. Between beaches and mountains, this is a land of writers and artists.

Diafanís magazine arrived in this city via the Internet to talk with Gisele.

Gisele Abou Kheir is a Lebanese woman with a degree in art who, a few years ago, decided to work from her home studio and offer her handmade products, her handicrafts, from Deir El-Qamar, in Mount Lebanon.

She brings a touch of her country’s culture to cups, vases, fans, bags, and more.

 

• How did you discover your calling for art and the beautiful handmade objects you make?

I graduated with a Diploma in Art from the Lebanese University. Over the years, I first expressed my drawing and passion for art through oil paintings. Then, I transformed that art into works that showcase Lebanese art heritage.

 

• How long have you been working in this field?

I started drawing on coffee cups and Lebanese lamps about eight years ago.

 

 

 

• What inspires you to do it? And what are your favorite materials?

I was looking for part-time work because I have two children to support, so I moved the artisan workshop into my home.

As for drawing, I like to translate my passion into some object we can use at home, such as coffee cups, Lebanese lamps, and a jug, until I reach the point of drawing on clothes, hats, purses, and many other beautiful things.

 

 

• How do you promote them?

I promote my art through social media like Instagram and Facebook. I also participate in interviews on Lebanese television, in the exhibition I’m participating in Lebanon, and, currently, in your magazine.

 

• How do you sell your crafts?

I sell my items to art lovers. I placed my items at Moussa Castle in Beit el Dine, at Al-Midan Restaurant in Deir El Qamar, as well as at the market where I participate.

 

• Are these products purchased mostly by local Lebanese people or also by tourists?

Many people love handicrafts, especially tourists who discover Lebanon through my works and drawings. Furthermore, Lebanese people are the ones who buy the handicrafts I draw.

 

• Who has been organizing art sales events in Deir Al-Qamar? Is it the first event?  What do they entail?

The exhibition at Deir El Qamar is organized by Siraj El Deir, and Souk El Balad is collaborating. Siraj El Deir is a women’s group that highlights the work of young artisans from the Chouf. This is their seventh exhibition.

I graduated with a Diploma in Art from Lebanese University, and I translate my passion for art by using any piece we can decorate our homes.

I started about 8 years ago, opening my workshop in my home. My goal is to reach the homes of the world using my art.

GISELE ABOU KHEIR UNA ARTISTA LEBANESA DE DEIR EL QAMAR

 

Si paseas por el centro-sur del Líbano, en la Gobernación del Monte Líbano, te encuentras en Deir Al Qamar, el «Monasterio de la Luna», como se llama esta ciudad. Entre playas y montañas, esta es una tierra de escritores y artistas.

Y la revista Diafanís llegó a esta ciudad a través de internet para conversar con Gisele.

Gisele Abou Kheir es una mujer libanesa licenciada en arte que, hace unos años, decidió trabajar desde el estudio de su casa y ofrecer sus productos artesanales de Deir El-Qamar, en Monte Líbano.

Aporta un toque de la cultura de su país a tazas, jarrones, abanicos, bolsos y más.

 

• ¿Cómo descubriste tu vocación por el arte y los hermosos objetos que realizas artesanalmente?

Me gradué con un Diploma en Arte de la Universidad Libanesa. Primero, a lo largo de los años, plasmé mi dibujo y mi pasión por el arte en pinturas al óleo. Luego, transformé ese arte en obras que muestran el arte libanés patrimonial.

 

• ¿Cuánto tiempo llevas trabajando en este campo?

-Empecé a dibujar sobre tazas de café y lámparas libanesas hace unos ocho años.

 

• ¿Qué te inspira a hacer esto? ¿Y cuáles son tus materiales favoritos?

Buscaba trabajo a tiempo parcial porque tengo dos hijos que mantener, así que trasladé el taller artesanal a mi casa.

En cuanto al dibujo, me gusta plasmar mi pasión en algún objeto que podamos usar en casa, como tazas de café, lámparas libanesas y una jarra, hasta llegar al punto de dibujar en ropa, sombreros, bolsos y muchas otras cosas hermosas.

 

• ¿Cómo los promueves?

Promociono mi arte a través de redes sociales como Instagram y Facebook. También participo en entrevistas en la televisión libanesa, en la exposición en la que participo en Líbano y, actualmente, en su revista.

 

• ¿Cómo comercializas tus artesanías?

Vendo mis artículos a amantes del arte. Los he colocado en el Castillo Moussa en Beit el Dine, en el restaurante Al-Midan en Deir El Qamar y en el mercado donde participo.

 

• ¿Estos productos son adquiridos principalmente por libaneses locales o también por turistas?

A mucha gente le encanta la artesanía, especialmente a los turistas que descubren el Líbano a través de mis obras y dibujos. También, son los libaneses quienes compran las artesanías que dibujo.

 

• ¿Quién ha estado organizando eventos de venta de arte en Deir Al-Qamar? ¿Es el primer evento? ¿En qué consisten?

La exposición en Deir El Qamar está organizada por Siraj El Deir en colaboración con Souk El Balad. Siraj El Deir es un grupo de mujeres que destaca el trabajo de jóvenes artesanas del Chouf. Esta es su séptima exposición.

Tengo un diploma en Arte de la Universidad Libanesa y transmito mi pasión por el arte con cualquier pieza que podamos usar para decorar nuestros hogares.
