Apzal Hosein writer from Canada

 

Apzal Hosein, a writer from Canada, talked to Diafanís magazine about his books and the similarities and differences between his life and the life of the Lebanese author Kahlil Gibran.

With the sounds and colors of the memories, pages of books, thoughts, the interview continued:

 

How did you become a writer?

At the young and impressionable age of thirteen or fourteen, I read Kahlil Gibran’s immortal masterpiece The Prophet and it had the most profound effect on my thoughts. I realized the power and influence that words had on people’s minds and hearts and knew then that I wanted to become a writer and move people with my thoughts and words.

 

Do you write novels, stories, poems? Which literary gender do you prefer?

So far I’ve written an autobiographical novel titled A Story to Tell, and a book of poetry and short stories titled One Straight Path. Both books were later combined into one after being separately released. My writing is generally for everyone and I believe everyone can enjoy it.

 

What are subjects inspire you to write?

I get my inspiration from my everyday life, the situations that I encounter, and the real-life people that I have met who made a definite impression on my thinking and daily decision-making.

 

You have two books published. One of them is A Story to Tell and One Straight Path. Could you share with us what it is about?

A Story to Tell is based entirely on my life experiences in my early twenties and the various problems that I faced in my attempts to marry the woman I loved. At age fourteen, I read Gibran’s novel Broken Wings about an arranged and forced marriage and that was basically what happened to my wife and me, but the ending was different from Gibran’s novel. My story is a true account of all the trials and tribulations that we went through to be together as husband and wife. One Straight Path was my first book and was written between 1981 and 1982 while experiencing my personal tragic love story which I wrote in detail in my novel. These poems and short stories were all my own but due to Gibran’s influence, I’ve been told many times that they were similar in style and content to his philosophy and spiritual themes.

 

 

When and how did you discover Kahlil Gibran? Did he influence your philosophy of life?

I discovered Kahlil Gibran at age thirteen and immediately realized that Gibran’s philosophy of life was exactly as I believed in my heart as to how life should be, and I grasped tightly to Gibran’s words of comfort and peace and have never looked back or questioned anything and have been walking in his footsteps ever since. I’m presently 64 years old so that’s over fifty years. Most likely it will always be this way. There is no other philosophy of life that can derail me from the path that I have freely chosen.

 

Apart from Kahlil Gibran, who else influences your work?

There is no one else who has had such a profound effect on my thoughts and actions in my life. However, there are several musicians that I admire and who hold a deep place in my heart. To mention just a few I would have to include the American singer/poet Bob Dylan, Canadians Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, and Englishman Roger Hodgson. And of course, all of The Beatles.

 

The other book that you have published is Walking in the Footsteps of Kahlil Gibran.  Did you write this book with another author? How was this experience to write with another writer?

The co-author of my most recent book Walking in the Footsteps of Kahlil Gibran is Renee Nassif. I met Renee on Facebook after she commented on some quotes that I had posted. I immediately knew that she loved Kahlil Gibran as much as I did. She was not an experienced author but was most helpful in assisting me in telling my stories about Kahlil Gibran and myself. It was a great experience writing a book with another person and I would consider writing another book with Renee Nassif in the future.

 

How is this book related to Kahlil Gibran?

This most recent book Walking in the Footsteps of Kahlil Gibran is about the similarities and synchronicities that I share with Kahlil Gibran. For example, we both started in poverty and emigrated to North America at age 12. Gibran went to Boston, and I came to Toronto, Canada with my two brothers and three sisters. We lived nearly parallel lives while separated by over a century. This book documents most of our commonalities but also our differences.

 

 

What are your future projects?

My future projects include writing a screenplay based on my novel A Story To Tell. I have never attempted to write a screenplay before but I believe I will get this accomplished eventually. It has been on my mind for a few decades. My son Shaq is a graduate in Cinema from the University of Toronto and it is my fervent hope that Shaq will direct my movie when I finish my screenplay.

 

I would like to add that I would like people to read my book without comparing me to Kahlil Gibran. I am a person with my own and different life experiences. Preface to Walking in the Footsteps of Kahlil Gibran

The year was 1971, when, at the young age of 13, I was first introduced to the Lebanese writer, poet, artist, and philosopher, Kahlil Gibran. It was a year after our family had moved from Trinidad, in the West Indies, and emigrated to Toronto, Canada. The book was titled, «The Prophet» and would have a phenomenal impact upon my life.

Even at the age of 13, I was struck by the power and splendor of his words as I read that beautiful, slim manifesto. I was under his hypnotic spell and would remain so for the rest of my life, some fifty years later. From my humble beginnings, I had miraculously discovered the rich, predestined path that I was to follow, walking in his footsteps, my human attempt to live a loving, spiritual, and truthful life. I encourage you, the readers, to determine if I have succeeded in my loving tribute to him and his legacy. This is the reason that I have decided to pay homage to Kahlil Gibran and to share the beautiful, spiritual way of life that he lived.

Another purpose in writing this book is to encourage the new generation of youths, who are growing up in this world without a true role model, and to introduce them to someone who exemplifies a spiritual example to follow. Kahlil Gibran was a man that every person of every religion and way of life can emulate, simply by opening the book and beginning to read the pages of «The Prophet.» By learning and understanding how to live a more evolved earthly and spiritual life, we are allowed to also walk in his footsteps.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

 

Apzal Hosein was born in Trinidad & Tobago (West Indies) on Nov. 1st. 1958. He is the eldest of six children. Apzal immigrated to Toronto, Canada in October of 1970.

His first book, One Straight Path is a collection of poetry and short stories written and published in 1982. A Story To Tell is the author’s first novel, but the second book, written and published in 1997. His most recent book, Walking in the Footsteps of Kahlil Gibran was written in 2021 in collaboration with Renee Nassif, MSW Ph.D. Candidate of Psychology.

The writer is currently working on a screenplay adaptation of his true life story A Story To Tell, as well as the fourth book about some of the famous luminaries (mostly actors and musicians) that he has met and the impact and influence they had on his life.

Apzal also recently obtained a diploma at age 62, in Addictions and Social Services. He lives with his wife, two sons, a daughter, her husband, and two grandsons in Mississauga, Canada.

• ¿Cómo comenzó su carrera de escritor?

A la joven e impresionable edad de 13/14 leí la obra maestra inmortal de Kahlil Gibran ‘El Profeta’ y tuvo el efecto más profundo en mis pensamientos. Me di cuenta del poder y la influencia que las palabras tienen en la mente y el corazón de las personas y entonces supe que quería convertirme en escritor y conmover a la gente con mis propios pensamientos y palabras.

 

• ¿Escribes novelas, cuentos, poemas? ¿Qué género prefiere?

Hasta ahora he escrito una novela autobiográfica ‘Una historia para contar’ y un libro de poesía y cuentos titulado ‘Un camino recto’ que combiné en un solo libro. Antes eran libros separados. Mis escritos son generalmente para todos y el género no importa. Creo que todos pueden disfrutar de mis escritos.

 

• ¿Cuáles son los temas que lo inspiran a escribir?

Obtengo mi inspiración de mi vida cotidiana, las situaciones que encuentro y las personas de la vida real que he conocido y que marcaron definitivamente mi forma de pensar y tomar decisiones diarias.

 

• Tienes dos libros publicados. Uno de ellos es “Una historia que contar y Un camino recto”. ¿Compartiría con nosotros de qué se tratan?

‘Una historia para contar’ se basa enteramente en mis propias experiencias de vida a los 22/23 años y los diversos problemas que enfrenté en mis intentos de casarme con la mujer que amaba. A los 14 años leí la novela de Gibran ‘Alas rotas’ sobre un arreglo y el matrimonio forzado y eso fue básicamente lo que me pasó a mí (y a mi esposa), pero el final fue totalmente diferente al de la novela de Gibran ‘Alas rotas’. Mi novela es un relato real de todas las pruebas y tribulaciones que mi esposa y yo atravesamos para estar juntos como marido y mujer. ‘Un camino recto’ fue mi primer libro y fue escrito en 1981/82 mientras experimentaba mi trágica historia de amor personal que escribí en detalle en mi novela. Los poemas y cuentos eran todos míos, pero debido a la influencia de Kahlil Gibran me han dicho muchas veces que eran similares en estilo y contenido a la propia filosofía y temas espirituales de Gibran.

 

• ¿Cuándo y cómo descubre a Gibran Khalil Gibran? ¿Influyó en su filosofía de vida?

Descubrí a Khalil Gibran a los 13 años e inmediatamente me di cuenta de que la filosofía de vida de Gibran era exactamente como creía en mi corazón sobre cómo debería ser la vida y me aferré fuertemente a las palabras de consuelo y paz de Gibran y nunca miré hacia atrás ni cuestioné nada desde entonces y he estado siguiendo sus pasos desde entonces. Actualmente tengo 64 años, por lo que son más de 50 años. Lo más probable es que siempre sea así. No hay otra filosofía de vida que pueda descarrilarme del camino que he elegido libremente.

 

• ¿Hay otros autores además de Gibran Khalil Gibran que han influenciado su trabajo?

No hay absolutamente nadie más que haya tenido un efecto tan profundo en mis pensamientos y acciones en mi vida. Sin embargo, hay varios músicos que admiro y que tienen un lugar profundo en mi corazón. Para mencionar solo algunos, tendría que incluir al cantante y poeta estadounidense Bob Dylan, los canadienses Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot y Leonard Cohen y el inglés Roger Hodgson. Y por supuesto los Beatles.

 

• El otro libro que tiene publicado es: “Caminando tras las huellas de Khalil Gibran”. ¿Escribió ese libro con otro autor? ¿Cómo fue esta experiencia de escribir con otro escritor?

La co-autora de mi libro más reciente ‘Siguiendo los pasos de Kahlil Gibran’ es Renee Nassif. Conocí a Renee en Facebook después de que comentara algunas citas que publiqué. Inmediatamente supe que amaba a Kahlil Gibran tanto como yo. Ella no era una autora experimentada, pero fue de gran ayuda al ayudarme a contar mis historias sobre Kahlil Gibran y yo. Fue una gran experiencia escribir un libro con otra persona y definitivamente consideraría escribir otro libro con Renee Nassif en el futuro.

 

• ¿Cómo se relaciona este libro con  Khalil Gibran?

Este libro más reciente, ‘Siguiendo los pasos de Kahlil Gibran’, trata sobre las similitudes y sincronicidades que comparto con Kahlil Gibran. Por ejemplo, ambos comenzamos en la pobreza y emigramos a América del Norte a los 12 años. Gibran se fue a Boston, EE. UU. y yo vine a Toronto, Canadá, con mis 2 hermanos y 3 hermanas. Vivíamos vidas casi paralelas mientras estábamos separados por más de un siglo. Este libro documenta la mayoría de nuestros puntos en común, pero también nuestras diferencias.

 

• ¿Cuáles son tus proyectos futuros?

Mis proyectos futuros incluyen escribir un guión basado en mi novela ‘Una historia para contar’. Nunca antes había intentado escribir un guión, pero creo que lo lograré con el tiempo. Ha estado en mi mente durante bastantes décadas. Mi hijo Shaq se graduó en Cine en la Universidad de Toronto y tengo la ferviente esperanza de que Shaq dirija mi película cuando termine mi guión.

Me gustaría agregar que me gustaría que la gente leyera mi libro sin compararme con Kahlil Gibran. Soy mi propia persona con mis propias y diferentes experiencias de vida. De ninguna manera estoy comparándome con Kahlil Gibran y preferiría tener la misma oportunidad de ser reconocido como autor por derecho propio.

Prefacio a Siguiendo los pasos de Khalil Gibran

Era el año 1971 cuando, a la temprana edad de 13 años, me presentaron por primera vez al escritor, poeta, artista y filósofo libanés Kahlil Gibran. Fue un año después de que nuestra familia se mudara de Trinidad, en las Indias Occidentales, y emigró a Toronto, Canadá. El libro se titulaba «El Profeta» y tendría un impacto fenomenal en mi vida.

Incluso a la edad de 13 años, me impresionó el poder y el esplendor de sus palabras mientras leía ese hermoso y delgado manifiesto. Yo estaba bajo su hechizo hipnótico y permanecería así por el resto de mi vida, unos cincuenta años más tarde. Desde mis humildes comienzos había descubierto milagrosamente el camino rico y predestinado que debía seguir, siguiendo sus huellas, mi intento humano de vivir una vida amorosa, espiritual y veraz. Los animo a ustedes, los lectores, a determinar si he tenido éxito en mi amoroso homenaje a él y su legado. Esta es la razón por la que he decidido rendir homenaje a Kahlil Gibran y compartir su hermosa y espiritual forma de vida que vivió.

Apzal Hosein

Nació en Trinidad West Indies el 1 de noviembre de 1958 y emigré a Toronto Canadá en 1970 a los 12 años.
Siempre me ha interesado la escritura y me han influido profundamente los escritos del poeta libanés-estadounidense Kahlil Gibran.

Escribió mi primer poema a los 15 años en la escuela secundaria y finalmente publiqué mi primer libro ‘One Straight Path’ a los 21 años.

Su segundo libro es una novela autobiográfica basada en una experiencia en 1980-81. Esto fue publicado en 1997.
Su libro más reciente, ‘Siguiendo los pasos de Kahlil Gibran’, fue escrito en 2021 durante la pandemia con la ayuda de la coautora Renee Nassif.

Actualmente está trabajando en su cuarto libro sobre algunas de las luminarias famosas (principalmente actores y músicos) que he conocido y el impacto y la influencia que tienen en mi vida.
